Overview of the Reading Challenge

The Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School Reading Challenge is a multi-platform literacy initiative designed to engage students in reading through both print books and digital resources. Its goal is to promote consistent reading habits, improve comprehension skills, and foster a love for literature by offering students diverse ways to access books.

Core Components
  1. Print Books
    • Students can borrow physical books from the school library collection.
    • Titles are searchable through the Alexandria Library System, which serves as the school’s catalog.
    • Students can visit the library in person to check out books.
  2. Digital Books (eBooks)
    • AppsForGaps resources, such as Lightbox and AV,2 provide interactive eBooks with multimedia features.
    • Epic Books: The school library account allows students to access thousands of age-appropriate titles.
    • Hoopla App (via GVI Libraries): Offers additional eBook and audiobook options for students.
Reading Platforms

The challenge uses two major platforms to track and motivate reading:

  • Heifer’s Read to Feed (via Beanstack)
This program encourages students to read while contributing to a charitable cause—supporting Heifer International’s mission to fight hunger and poverty. Reading becomes a way to make a global impact.
  • Whooo’s Reading
A gamified platform where students log their reading, answer comprehension questions, and earn points or badges. It emphasizes accountability and comprehension.
How It Works
  • Students choose books from print or digital collections.
  • They log their reading progress on Whooo’s Reading while teachers and the school librarian help them log in to Heifer's Beanstack.
  • Students can log using the Reading Log forms, or access their Whoos Reading account online.
  • Teachers and the school librarian monitor participation and provide incentives (e.g., certificates, recognition, or prizes).
  • The program integrates technology and traditional reading to cater to different learning styles and access needs.
Educational Impact
  • Accessibility: Students can read anywhere—at home or school—through multiple platforms.
  • Engagement: Gamification and charitable goals make reading more meaningful.
  • Skill Development: Improves literacy, comprehension, and digital navigation skills.
  • Community Connection: Links reading to global citizenship through Heifer’s mission.
